Opportunity & Innovation Assessment Examples

Before commissioning your own research, we recommend that all potential customer's review the example requests below that were sent to Aulivar.

The outputs provide a strong indication of what you can typically expect from your own unique, commissioned research deliverable.

Independent Living & Ageing

A service designed to help older people remain independent in their own homes for longer without making them feel constantly monitored or forcing them into an expensive monthly subscription.

Focus on a combination of simple home technology, family support, reminders, safety checks and practical assistance, and explore what customers would genuinely value or pay for.

The buyer might be the older person, their family, a local authority, housing provider or insurer, and the needs of the buyer may be very different from those of the person actually using the service.

Focus on reducing avoidable accidents, missed medication, social isolation and unnecessary moves into residential care while respecting dignity and privacy.

This could be a product, service, one-off home package or something delivered through partners. Aulivar should explore the strongest commercial directions rather than assume my first concept is correct.

Logistics & Reusable Packaging

A new business that could reduce the amount of single-use packaging used by online retailers. Initial thought are around a reusable parcel or packaging system that consumers return after receiving an order, with the packaging then inspected, cleaned and put back into circulation.

The environmental argument seems obvious, but explore concerns that reverse logistics, loss rates, cleaning, tracking and customer inconvenience could make the economics unattractive.

Focus on whether the better opportunity might actually be the packaging itself, a shared return network, packaging-as-a-service, technology for tracking reusable assets, or a business-to-business system used only within selected sectors.

Explore how crowded this market is and identify where competitors are weak, what would need to be true for the economics to work, and where a genuinely defensible business might be created.

Maritime & Port Operations

A new product or service for commercial ports that could improve the efficiency of vessel arrivals, berth allocation, loading, unloading and landside movements.

Ports involve many different organisations, systems and hand-offs, so delays in one area can create congestion and cost elsewhere.

Focus on whether better use of operational data, forecasting, automation, scheduling or coordination could reduce waiting time and improve use of expensive infrastructure, but do not assume that another software platform is automatically the answer.

The buyers could include port operators, terminal operators, shipping companies or logistics providers, and their incentives may not always align.

Aulivar should explore where the largest avoidable costs and coordination problems occur, what existing solutions fail to address well, and whether there is room for a scalable commercial proposition.

Home Energy & Retrofit

A new commercial offering that helps UK homeowners decide which energy-efficiency improvements are actually worth making to their property.

Homeowners are presented with options such as insulation, heat pumps, solar panels, batteries, smart controls, glazing and ventilation, but the economics can be confusing and depend heavily on the property, energy prices, installation quality and household behaviour.

Focus on whether there is an opportunity to give people a more trustworthy, property-specific route from assessment through to prioritisation and perhaps installation, financing or supplier selection.

This cannot simply become another energy comparison website, and it is important to fully explore how independence and credibility may be important differentiators.

Aulivar should investigate the strongest unmet needs, possible business models, route-to-market options and where innovation could make the purchasing decision substantially easier for customers.

Food Waste & Hospitality

A new commercial offering for restaurants, hotels, pubs and catering businesses that helps them reduce food waste and the cost associated with buying ingredients that are ultimately thrown away.

Pay less attention on simply measuring waste after it happens and more interested in whether purchasing, menu design, preparation, portioning, demand forecasting and stock rotation could be improved together.

There may be opportunities involving software, kitchen equipment, weighing or sensing technology, operational services, supplier integration or new commercial models, but don't assume that technology is necessarily the answer.

The customer would need to see clear financial savings because hospitality businesses already operate under significant cost pressure and may resist anything that creates additional work.

Aulivar should explore the concept from first principles, identify where the strongest unmet need exists, suggest commercially realistic propositions and highlight anything that could make the idea difficult to scale.
